Before November 1959, hockey goalies did not wear the face mask and suffered many severe lacerations, broken noses, and teeth knocked out from the puck striking them. It frequently took many stitches to close those wounds. Imagine a puck traveling at 90 or 100 mph and what that would feel like hitting your face. No, on second thought, I don’t want to think about that on my face.
